615. Doctor Stephen Chandler GRIGGS59,60 was born on 11 September 1819 in Pomfret Township, Windham County, CT.184 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Killingly (now Putnam Heights), Windham County, CT.27 He died on 1 February 1901 at the age of 81 in Nutley, Nutley Township, Essex County, NJ.178

Obituary Notes: "He was the son of Nathan and Sarah Marcy Griggs, and the husband of Ellen Day Griggs and Harriet Backus Griggs.

He graduated from Brown University and studied medicine at the University of New York. He was a doctor in Danielson ten years, and in Brooklyn, New York for 41 years. He was a member of the King's County Medical Society and declined the presidency when offered to him. He retired in 1896 and then lived with his daughter, Mrs. Sally Backus Griggs Genung, in Nutley, N.J.

He died on February 1, 1901 when, as an invalid, he fell from his chair into a grate fire and burned to death. (See NY Times article dated February 3, 1901." Stephen was buried in Danielson, Windham County, CT.178 in the Old Westfield Cemetery.
