22. James Knox Polk ANEY was born on 13 February 1844 in New York City, Kings County, NY.2,6,14 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.6 (He was listed as "James R. P.") He died on 29 April 1932 at the age of 88 in Wyoming, Chisago County, MN.14

Obituary Notes: "J. P. Aney of Wyoming, MN, 88 year old civil war veteran and the last surviving member of the G.A.R. Post of Linwood, Minnesota, answered the final taps at the Veterans Hospital Sunday when he passed away, death coming quietly from the infirmities of old age. He had been taken to the hospital three weeks ago on Wednesday, April 13 where he was immediately confined to his bed. His exact age was 88 years, 2 months and 16 days.
Hundreds gathered at the M.E. Church of Wyoming, Minnesota, to pay tribute to their communities' well loved and respected citizen yesterday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. W.B. Fleagle of North Branch, Minnesota, officiated at the services. Pallbearers for the gallant soldier of the civil war were six members of the sons of veterans of Linwood, Minnesota, made up of sons of the old G.A.R. Interment was made in the Wyoming cemetery.
James P. Aney was born in New York, New York, February 13, 1844. He moved to Wisconsin with his father Michael Aney in 1847 where he was educated in public schools. He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 in the year of 1861 and served four years with Company I of the Eighth Wisconsin Eagle Regiment. He was in service with this regiment in campaigning along the Mississippi River. While fighting for the union Mr. Aney served in 23 battles and 19 skirmishes making for himself an enviable record as a soldier. The following are some of the places where he fought: Camp Mobile, Vicksburg, Corinth, Ashville, Jackson, Columbus, Memphis, Inks, Pilot Knob, Fredericksburg, and Blue River. During his participation in these battles he was wounded three times and carried two bullets in his flesh the remainder of his life.
After being mustered out of the army Mr. Aney was married in New York City in the year 1865 to Miss Mary Adams and settled in southern Illinois, where he farmed eleven years. He moved to Yankton, South Dakota in 1876, where he followed the trade of a mason. Three children were born to this union and they are: Hallock Aney of Minneapolis, Minnesota, William M. Aney of Wyoming, Minnesota and Mrs. Margaret DeGray of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mrs. Aney died at Yankton in 1881.
Mr. Aney was later married for the second time to Miss Isabella Peterson at Yankton, August 25, 1881. He lived at Yankton until 1883 when he moved with his wife to Anoka and from there to Linwood, Minnesota where they lived eighteen years. They finally moved to Wyoming, Minnesota, where he lived with his family for the past twenty-eight years. To the last union two children were born, Mrs. Mary Youngberg of North Branch, Minnesota, and Mrs. Delia Voss of Wyoming, Minnesota.
Left to mourn his loss are his wife, five children, sixteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge of Wyoming, Minnesota and the G.A.R. Post of Linwood of which he was the last survivor. His record as a soldier is outstanding and leaves for him a niche in the hall of fame as one of the most gallant soldiers that ever served his country."
James was buried in Wyoming, Chisago County, MN.14
