Gottlieb appeared in the census in 1870 in Waterloo Township, Jefferson County, WI.^4,5 His occupation was "Farm Laborer." (His surname is listed as "Batcal" in the Ancestry.com census index.) He appeared in the census in 1880 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁶ His occupation was "Farmer."
