118. Helen Margaret SWEET was born on 19 November 1912 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.49,72,79 (She may have been born 19 April 1913.) She appeared in the census in 1920 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.57 She appeared in the census in 1930 in La Grange Township, Monroe County, WI.62 Helen appeared in the census in 1940 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.103 She died on 11 December 2006 at the age of 94 in Waukesha, Waukesha County, WI.49

Obituary Notes: "Helen Margaret Smith, 94, of Waukesha and formerly of Tomah passed away Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at the Waukesha Springs Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 19, 1912, to Harry and Deda (Getman) Sweet in Tomah. Helen was united in marriage to Harold Martin who later preceded her in death. She was later married to La Vern “Doc” Hill; who also preceded her in death.

Helen spent her working years as a schoolteacher. She was a social person and enjoyed being around people. She also worked many years as a waitress and a bartender. In her spare time she loved dancing, ceramics, gardening and playing cards.

Helen was later married to Ed Smith. She spent most of her life in the Tomah area and will be remembered by many.

She is survived by eight children, Patricia “Patty” Dana (Dick Dana), Glenn Hill, Gary Hill, Jane Rohde, Gene (Ter’e) Hill, Gordon Hill, Roy (Jill) Hill and James Hill; 14 grandchildren, Scott LaBerge, Deda Kreuzer, Jacqueline Gelly, Patrick Watson, Scott Hill, Jennifer Cunningham, Juliet Holzenberg, Richard Rohde, Lisa Reimers, Lana Atkins, Lora Baccralla, Tania Hill, Jessica Hill and Christopher Hill; 26 great- grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Deda; her husbands, Harold Martin, La Vern “Doc” Hill and Ed Smith; a brother, Glenn and three grandchildren, Glenn, Matthew and Dane.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Pastor William Swan will officiate. Burial will follow in the La Grange Cemetery, Tomah. Family and friends are invited for visitation Tuesday from noon until the time of service at the funeral home."

Helen Margaret SWEET and Harold Elmer Rudolph MARTIN were married on 1 November 1932 in Rockford, Rockford Township, Winnebago County, IL.114,128 They114,128 were divorced before May 1935.79 Harold Elmer Rudolph MARTIN, son of Rudolph Gustav Theodor MARTIN and Anna Katherine BRANDAU, was born on 7 October 1907 in Wisconsin.62

He died on 16 May 1960 at the age of 52.79 He was buried in San Diego, San Diego County, CA.129 in the National Cemetery.

They79,114,117 were divorced before January 1960.79 LaVern Dano "Doc" HILL, son of Merle William HILL and Blanche Olive DANO, was born on 7 February 1913 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.7,72 (The Oak Grove Cemetery records list his birth date as 27 Feb 1913.) He graduated in 1931 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.130 from Tomah High School. He appeared in the census in 1940 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.103 Doc died on 16 April 2000 at the age of 87 in Las Vegas, Clark County, NV.117 He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.7 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Helen Margaret SWEET and Edward L. "Ed" SMITH were married on 3 January 1960.131 Edward L. "Ed" SMITH was born on 15 November 1918.79,114,117,132 (He may have been born in 1912.) He died on 22 December 2001 at the age of 83 in Waukesha, Waukesha County, WI.117,132

Obituary Notes: "WAUKESHA - Edward L. Smith of Waukesha died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at age 83.

He was the beloved husband of Helen (nee Sweet) for 42 years; the loving father of Emil (Joanne) of Franklin, Margaret (James) Machalk of Mukwonago, Vernielle Moffatt of West Monroe, La., and Lauritz (Joyce) of St. Francis; and stepfather of James Hill of Waukesha. He was the cherished grandfather of Mary Lapp (William Mirr), Edward (Lisa) Smith, Denise Crites, Gilbert Craighead, James (Laura) Smith, JerriLynn (Craig) Markham, Tammy Smith, Rebecca (Bill) Rath, Annamarie (Guy) Bartel, Todd (Michele) Smith, Timothy (Kristen) Smith and 19 great-grandchildren.

Ed was a retired member of the Operating Engineers Local No. 139.

According to his wishes, his remains were donated to the Medical College of Wisconsin. There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
