Second Generation

2. John BUSACK Sr. was born about 1819 in Preussen (Prussia).1,3,4,5 (This is a picture of the 1885 Wisconsin State Census record for Oakdale Township.)

(His Registration of Marriage certificate contains his city of birth, but it is barely legible. It appears to be "Lusitoe Hob.")

(There was a William Busack, age 31, born in Prussia, and his wife, Caroline, age 25, born in Prussia, in the 1860 Census for Germantown, Washington County, WI, listed in page 11 of the 1860 Census. It is not known if they were related.) He appeared in the census in 1870 in Germantown Township, Juneau County, WI.5,6 His household consisted of John; his wife, "Christine"; and their five children. It is not known why his wife was listed as "Christine." She was his first wife, and he married his second wife, Johanna, in 1867. (His birth place appears to have been listed as "Masaw" in the census.) He appeared in the census in 1875 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.7 His household consisted of 4 males and 3 females. John appeared in the census in 1880 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.3,8 His household consisted of John, age 60, occupation "Farmer," born in Prussia; his wife, Johanna, age 50, born in Prussia; his step-children, August, Frederick, Henry and Rosa; and his daughter, Annie, age 10.
He appeared in the census in June 1885 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.9 He was living alone. His household was between those of Frank Honish and Mr. and Mrs. George Kuckuck. George's wife was Rose Gabower, a daughter of John's second wife, Hannah (Couse) Gabower.

The witnesses at their marriage were Mr. and Mrs. Charles DeVilliers, who were his neighbors in the 1870 Census. Johanna "Hannah" COUSE, daughter of Godlop COUSE and Johanna UNKNOWN (COUSE), was born in 1829 in Preussen (Prussia).2,3,11,13,14,15 (Her name "before marriage" was listed as "Hanna Gabauer" on the Marriage Certificate of her daughter Rose in 1885. That was probably a mistake, as her own Marriage Certificate listed her parents' surname as what appears to be "Couse.")

(This picture was taken in the late-1800's.) She emigrated on 16 September 1857 from Obershasdorf (??), Germany.16 She emigrated from the port of Bremen on the ship "Meridian." Her place of origin was listed as "Oberhasdorf." The ship's manifest includes Ernst "Gehbauer," age 44; Johanna, age 29; and her son, Friedrich, age 1. They are listed as passengers 91, 92 and 93, respectively. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Germantown Township, Juneau County, WI.15 Hannah appeared in the census in 1880 in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, WI.3 She was living with her second husband, John Busack; his daughter, Annie; and her four children from her first marriage to Henry Gabower.
