133. Amaziah DOTEN (-) (~) was born on 20 September 1823 in Carver, Plymouth County, MA.1,44,45 (According to the 1900 Census for his son Charles, his birthplace was New York state. But the 1880 Census for himself and his biographical sketch listed it as Massachusetts. He may have been born in Middleboro, MA.) He appeared in the census in 1870 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.46 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.47 His occupation was "Farmer." Amaziah died on 18 January 1890 at the age of 66 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.1,45,48

From the Biographical History of La Crosse, Monroe and Juneau Counties, 1892: "Amaziah Doten, deceased, one of the honored pioneers of Monroe County, settled here in 1858. He was a native of Massachusetts. His parents moved to Camden, Oneida Co., New York, when he was a year old, and that was his home until he emigrated to Wis. in 1854, locating at Oconomowoc.

He was married in this state in 1855 (sic) to Ellen Shaver, a daughter of John and Jane (Rogers) Shaver, who settled in that town in 1843. Mr. Shaver was a farmer by occupation and managed his business with much ability. His wife died in 1840, and he was married a second time to Miss Ann Tuft, a native of Ireland.

Mr. and Mrs. Doten, the spring after their marriage, removed to Linden, Juneau Co., Wis., making the journey with an ox team; they resided at this place one year, and then Mr. Doten bought 80 acres of land on Section 10, Wellington Township, which was occupied and improved until his death in January 1890, aged sixty-sex years. During his residence here, he held many responsible positions of honor and trust. He was a carpenter by trade, and was employed on nearly all of the houses erected in this part of the country in the '50's and '60's.

To Mr. and Mrs. Doten were born seven children: Charles J. married Miss Ellen Hall, and they reside at Tomah and have a family of three children. Maggie A. is the wife of Andrew Beardsley, a farmer of this township; they have a family of four children. Ella J. is the wife of Clarence Webb, and the mother of five children. James S. and Myron W. are carpenters and joiners by trade; Sylvia A. is a teacher in Glendale Township; and Clarence E. is on the old homestead.

In October 1890, Mrs. Doten was married to Mr. L. A. Stedman, a native of New York, who came to Wisconsin in 1865, and located at Ontario. He is a veteran of the Rebellion, and made a record worthy of preservation; he was a member of Co. K, 97th New York Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the following named battles: Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg (two engagements), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Fort Royal, Briston Station, Culpeper Court House, Kelley's Ford, Rappahannock Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, and Bermuda Hundred."

. He was buried in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.49,50 in the Wilton Township Cemetery.

Amaziah DOTEN (-) (~) and Ellen Mary SHAVER were married on 22 November 1855 in Oconomowoc Township, Waukesha County, WI.1,45,46 Ellen Mary SHAVER, daughter of John SHAVER and Jane ROGERS, was born on 23 March 1838 in Mexico, Oswego County, NY.1,46 She appeared in the census in 1870 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.46 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Wellington Township, Monroe County, WI.47 Ellen died on 30 June 1931 at the age of 93 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.1 She was buried in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.50 in the Wilton Township Cemetery.
