Johann August "John" GEHRKE1 was born on 14 January 1840 in Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).3,4,5,7,8,9 He emigrated in 1870 from Preussen (Prussia).10 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.7 His household consisted of "August" and his wife "Mary" and their son August. John appeared in the census in 1900 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.10 He was Lutheran in 1900 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.11 and was listed on the Membership Roster of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He died on 23 October 1905 at the age of 65 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.3,4,12,13 John was buried on 25 October 1905 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.13,14 in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.

John August Gehrke, first born and first son of Gottlieb john and Anna Christine was born January 14, 1840. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and attended Enterprise Elementary School about a mile from his home.
To their marriage nine children were born, namely August Ludwig, Augusta, Emma Louise, Amelia Alvina, Matilda Theresa, Edward Frederick William, Henry, Arnold and Anton.

Johann August "John" GEHRKE and Maria "Mary" MUHLBRADT were married on 5 March 1878 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.4,5,8,9,10,15 According to the 1900 Census, they had 12 children, of whom 9 were living at the time. That may have included the three children from Mary's first marriage in Germany. (The Monroe County Marriage Registration Index lists their marriage date as 14 June 1878.) Maria "Mary" MUHLBRADT1,4,16, daughter of Johann MUHLBRADT and Maria UNKNOWN (MUHLBRADT), was born on 14 February 1850 in Kreis Wongrowitz, Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).3,4,5,8,9,17 (Her maiden name was listed as "Muehbradt" in the baptism record of her daughter Wilhelmine, as "Muhlbradt" for her daughters Marie and Auguste, as "Mullbrath" for her son August and her daughter Mathilde, and "Millbrath" for her daughters Emma and Emilie.) She emigrated in 1878 from Preussen (Prussia).10 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.7 Mary appeared in the census in 1900 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.10 She died on 5 September 1902 at the age of 52 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.3,4,17 She was buried on 7 September 1902 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.3,14,17 in the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. (One source lists her surname as "Milbrath.")
