About two months ago she was taken slightly ill, but nothing serious was anticipated; but when a rapid decline set in, and a counsel of physicians was held, it was decided that quick consumption had wrought its work so well that there was no hope for recovery. She was confined to her bed but two weeks, and suffered very little, a fact which was a comfort to her loved ones. Miss Evans united with the M.E. church in 1896, and since has been a sweet spirited, devoted Christian. She was a member of Mrs. E.I. Weaver's Sunday School class. Beloved by all who knew her, in her sickness, she was surrounded by many friends who hoped in vain for her return to health."

From the book, "Obituaries of Friends and Relatives and Miscellaneous Items," written by Hiram Hector Griswold in 1908: "On Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 30, 1899, just before the sun looked over the eastern hills, death, the guest, to all unwelcomed, cast his mantle of gloom on the home of Daniel and Emma Evans in the removal of their eldest daughter, Viola Jane...." Hiram, a granduncle, wrote a beautiful four-page account of her life, suffering and death.
