Permelia GRISWOLD was born on 10 May 1823 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.2 She appeared in the census in 1830 in West Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.15 She appeared in the census in 1840 in Burns Township, Allegany County, NY.16 About 1845 Permelia was a tailor in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.11 She appeared in the census in 1850 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.41 She was living in the household of Daniel and Margaret Haas. Daniel's occupation was listed as "Tailor" and it is assumed the Permelia was working as a tailoress or a cloth weaver, which was her mother's occupation. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.21 Her husband had died, and she was living with their son, Fred. Her occupation was "Tailoress." Permelia appeared in the census in 1870 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.48 Her occupation was listed as "Keeps House." She appeared in the census in 1880 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.49 Her occupation was "Tailoress." She appeared in the census in 1900 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.50 Permelia died on 24 December 1900 at the age of 77 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.37,51,52 Obituary Notes: "Permelia Crane, the daughter of Samuel J. and Clarissa Griswold, was born in the town of Almond, Allegany County, N.Y., May 10, 1823. She lived with her parents until she arrived to a suitable age to learn a trade, after which she went to the village of Hornellsville, N.Y., where she took up the tailoring business for a life occupation.

She was married to Gardis Lamphere in the year 1853. To this union were born to them a son, which was an additional blessing in their home. Four years later the mantle of gloom was spread over her life by the death of her husband. She was left to tread life's pathway alone.

After a few years, she was again married, to John Crane, which made an agreeable union for a few years, when for the second time she was left a widow.

She died at her home 27 Hornell St., being 77 years, 7 months and 14 days old.

Mrs. Crane adopted the Christian religion in the early years of her life, and lived devoted to the cause of Christ until her death.

The funeral was conducted from the M. E. Church (of which she was a member) by Rev. W. Wilber, the discourse being from the text: He giveth his beloved sleep (Psalm. 120:2). The remains were laid to rest in the village cemetery."

Obituary Notes: "Permelia Griswold Crane, the daughter of Samuel J. and Clarissa Pettingill Griswold, born in the town of Almond, NY, May 10, 1823. She was married to Gardis Lamphere in the year of 1853. Issue: one son. Mr. Lamphere died in 1857. She later married John Crane. She died December 24, 1900, having been predeceased by her second husband. Burial in Angelica." She was buried in Angelica Township, Allegany County, NY.11

Permelia GRISWOLD and Gardus R. LAMPHERE were married in 1853.11,17,51 The 1900 Census indicated that they had 1 child, and that child--a son, Fred--was living at the time.

(The 1850 Census for Burns Township, Allegany County, NY contains a listing for the household of John Lamphere, age 37; his wife, Almena, age 35; and their son, John L., age 10. It is not known whether they were related, but there may have been a connection.) Gardus R. LAMPHERE died on 15 September 1857.11,51 He was buried in 1857 in Hornell, Steuben County, NY. in the Hope Cemetery.

Fred LAMPHERE was born in 1855 in New York.11,48 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.21 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.49 He was living with his father and step-mother and his occupation was listed as "Brick Mason."

Permelia GRISWOLD and John W. CRANE were married about 1861.11,17 John W. CRANE, son of Samuel H. CRANE and Elizabeth UNKNOWN (CRANE), was born in 1822 in New York.17,49 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Burns, Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.17 He and his wife and son Elijah were living with his parents. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Burns, Almond Township, Allegany County, NY.18 His occupation was listed as "Farmer." John appeared in the census in 1870 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.48 His household consisted of "John M.," age 47; his wife, "Pamilia," 47; and their children, Elijah, 22; Fred, 17; Susan, 15; and "Harrey," 14. His occupation was listed as "Baker." Fred was the son of Permelia, and the other children are believed to have been John's children from his first marriage. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Hornellsville Township, Steuben County, NY.49 His occupation was listed as "Baker." He died before December 1900 at the age of 78.51
