Francis L. BATTEN and Vernon Howard "Curly" LARSEN were married on 11 December 1960.92 Vernon Howard "Curly" LARSEN, son of Louis LARSEN and Myrtle VON HADEN, was born on 16 February 1937.93 He died on 11 April 2015 at the age of 78 in King, Waupaca County, WI.93

Obituary Notes: "Vernon “Curly” Howard Larsen, 78, formerly of Tomah passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015, at Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, Wis. He was born Feb. 16, 1937, to Louis and Myrtle (Von Haden) Larsen. Vern graduated from Tomah High School and then proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. While serving in the Air Force, he spent time in Greenland.

Vern was united in marriage Dec. 17, 1960, to Francis L. Batten. They had two children, Saundra Dee and Edgar George Allan. Vernon worked at Cram’s in Tomah and also with local harvests in the cranberry industry before beginning his career as a nursing assistant at Tomah VA Medical Center, where he later retired.

Vernon was meticulous about caring for his yard and flowers as well as waxing his vehicles and boat. For a time he enjoyed having fish aquariums and fish of all kinds. He spent hours watching them. He enjoyed spending time with his in-laws and family. Vern also loved fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, watering his lawn, boating, snowmobiling, dancing and playing cards and carrom. He loved caring for his geese, ponies, horses, dogs, cats and a few odd pets like Petunia the skunk, Ringo the raccoon, Lucky the pigeon and even a possum.

He is survived by his children, Sandy and Eddie, both of Camp Douglas; grandchild, Jessica Christine (McGinnis) Calkins; great-grandsons, Devin Christopher and Rylan Alexander, all of Tomah; his sister, Sharon Kuehl of Tomah; mother-in-law, Bessie Batten; brothers-in-law, Allen (Kathryn) Batten of Camp Douglas and Ralph (Linda) Batten of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Jeanette (Robert) Hayward of Camp Douglas; a cousin, Carol Sorrells of Oregon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Francis; his father, Louis; his mother, Myrtle; and stepfather, George Bacon; father-in-law, Edgar “Stub” Batten; a brother-in-law, John Eckelberg; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emery and Edna (Batten) Roberts; an uncle, Robert Von Haden; an aunt, Ellen Straight; and nephews, Dickie Von Haden and Tyler Eckelberg.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah. Pastor Jeff Ruetten will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Johns Cemetery, Shennington, Wis."
