Howard Edward BERNHARDT was born on 9 May 1927 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^{58,78,129,199} He was baptized on 26 May 1927.⁷⁸ He appeared in the census in 1930 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁹ Howard lived at his home in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI in April 2002.⁹⁷ He died on 1 May 2010 at the age of 82 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁹⁹

Obituary Notes: "Howard E. Bernhardt, 82, of Tomah died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was born May 9, 1927 to Edward and Erma (Marten) Bernhardt in the township of Ridgeville. He was united in marriage to Alta Calkins June 5, 1965 at the Warrens Baptist Church. He was a member of the Tomah Senior High School Graduating Class of 1945. He farmed in the Tomah area for 9 years and the worked in the maintenance department at Union Camp for 30 years until he retired in 1990. Howard was an avid Packer Fan and loyal Packer fan his whole life. He enjoyed working with his hands and spending time outdoors, working in his lawn and garden, and also fishing and hunting. Howard and Alta also enjoyed traveling together for many years; they took camping trips through out the U.S. traveling to such places as South Dakota, Florida, Branson, MO, and numerous trips to the Lake of the Woods to visit his cousin Garland. He loved his many dash hounds, Oscar, Dewy, and Snoopy and his current loyal companion Fritz.

He is survived by his wife, Alta, a daughter Linda Zimmerman of La Crosse, a sister Lyla (William) Benjamin of Tomah, 5 grand-pets, Ursa, Sprout, Tug, Peewee and Fritz, nieces, nephews many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joyce Howie, and a brother, Donald, a brother-in-law, Thomas Howie, and sister-in-law, Amy Bernhardt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2010, 11 a.m. at the Warrens Baptist Church, 101 Church St., Warrens. Tom Church will officiate. Burial will be in Warren-Mills Cemetery.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, 801 E. Monowau St., Tomah and on Tuesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Online condolences may be given at www.sonnenburgfamilyfh.com. Howard Edward BERNHARDT and Alta Lee Isla CALKINS were married on 5 June 1965 in Warrens, Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.^199,200 Alta Lee Isla CALKINS, daughter of Robert Alvin CALKINS and Bernice Irene RICHMOND, was born on 29 October 1924 in Monroe County, WI.⁵⁸ She appeared in the census in 1930 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁹ She died on 18 June 2019 at the age of 94 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, WI.²⁰¹

Obituary Notes: "Alta L. Bernhardt, 94 of La Crosse and formerly of Tunnel City, died Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.

She was born on October 29, 1924 to Robert A. and Bernice I. (Richmond) Calkins. In her earlier years, Alta grew up in the Warrens area attending country school. On June 5, 1965, she was united in marriage to Howard E. Bernhardt at the Warrens Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on May 1, 2010. Together, they resided in Tunnel City for over 40 years.

She worked as a receptionist for Dr. Floyd Weatherford’s dental office, retiring in 1989. She had an adventurous spirit, enjoying her travels to Branson and the Grand Old Opry, riding sidecar on a motorcycle, and fishing trips to Lake of the Woods and the local fishing holes. Going out to eat was a treat; ordering the biggest waffles on the menu topped with strawberries was always a favorite first choice for Alta. During the quiet moments, she could often be found digging in the garden, mixing up sweet nectar for the hummingbirds, in the kitchen canning or simply enjoying a four-legged friend on her lap. She loved the Dachshund breed and had many throughout her lifetime, her last being Fritz. She had a kind heart and a way of making people feel welcome in her home and was sure to never send anyone away hungry. Forever young at heart, Alta will be remembered for her zest for life and never acting her age.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Zimmerman of La Crosse, her grand cats, Charlie and Tuggy, an aunt Mildred Richmond, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard, siblings and in-laws, Dwaine and Pat Calkins, Darold and Darlene Calkins, Iona and Earl Mannie, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lyla and William Benjamin, Joyce and Thomas Howe, Donald and Amy Bernhardt.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, 11:00 A.M. at Grace Bible Church, 101 Church, Warrens. Pastor Dennis Frost will officiate. Burial will be in Warren Mills Cemetery."
