Joachim Friedrich "Joseph" MARTEN Jr. was born on 2 April 1855 in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).4,5,20,22 (According to the records of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ridgeville, his parents were "Joachim Martin, Sr." and "Dorothea Schroeder." According to the research of Arlyn Bernhardt, he was born out of wedlock to Joachim Schroeder and Dorothea "Dora" Marten. Arlyn feels that the person who transcribed the church records from German to English confused the father's and mother's surnames because the son carried the surname of the mother.)

(In his marriage record, his birth place was listed as "Meklenburg.") He emigrated in 1868 from Germany.8,12 He was Lutheran on 24 November 1879 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.17,39 when he became a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was listed on the Memberbership Roster in 1900. Joseph died on 27 April 1936 at the age of 81.23 He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.37 in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
