First Generation

1. Stephen HOPKINS (-) (~) was born in 1581 in Hampshire, England.^1,2 He emigrated in 1609 from England, United Kingdom.³ In 1620, he "was making his second trip to America. Eleven years earlier in 1609, he had sailed on the Sea Venture for Virginia, only to become shipwrecked in Bermuda--an incident that became the basis for Shakespeare's The Tempest. While in Bermuda, Hopkins had been part of an attempted mutiny and been sentenced to hang, but pleading tearfully for his life, he was, at the last minute, given a reprieve. Hopkins spent two years in Jamestown before returning to England."

Stephen died on 6 June 1644 at the age of 63 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.²
