1. John HOWLAND Sr. (*) (~) was born in 1602 in Of Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England.1 (This is a painting of a replica of the Mayflower.) About 1620 he was a manservant in Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.2 to John Carver. He emigrated in 1620 from England, United Kingdom.2,3,4 on the Mayflower. "In the Fall of 1620, the Mayflower's ability to steady herself in a gale produced a most deceptive tranquility for a young indentured servant named John Howland. As the Mayflower lay ahull, Howland apparently grew restless down below. He saw no reason why he could not venture out of the fetid depths of the 'tween decks for just a moment. After more than a month as a passenger ship, the Mayflower was no longer a sweet ship, and Howland wanted some air. So he climbed a ladder to one of the hatches and stepped onto the deck. Howland was from the inland town of Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, and he quickly discovered that the deck of a tempest-tossed ship was no place for a landsman."

He was nearly swept to his death during a severe storm on the passage. "He barely 'caught hold' of the 'topsail halyards,' being dragged fathoms under water till he was dragged up by that same rope, and by means of a boat hook managed to get into the ship again."

He was the 13th of the 41 signers of the Mayflower Compact. John died on 23 February 1672/3 at the age of 71 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.1,2,5
