Descendants of John Howland, Sr.

John Howland, Sr., was one of the approximately 100 passengers on the voyage of the Mayflower from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts, in 1620.

He was an 18-year-old hired hand who worked in the employ of John and Catherine Carver. He was nearly swept to his death during a severe storm during the voyage.

About 2 1/2 years after arriving in the New World, he married Elizabeth Tilley, who was also a passenger on the Mayflower with her parents, John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley, Sr.

He was the 13th signer of the Mayflower Compact.
