Joseph GRIGGS²⁷⁰ was born about 1780 in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.^5,271 He appeared in the census in 1810 in Durham, Greene County, NY.²⁷² This household of a Joseph Griggs that consisted of 1 male, age 26-44; 2 females, age Under 10; 1 female, age 10 thru 15; and 1 female, age 26-44. That may have been Joseph (age about 36); his daughter Lucinda (age 2); her sister, Almira (age about 10); and his wife, Lucinda (age 36). He appeared in the census in 1820 in Sidney, Delaware County, NY.²⁷³ This household is believed to be that of Joseph's family. It consisted of 1 male, age 10-16; 1 male, age 45 and over; 1 female, age 16-26; and 1 female, age 45 and over.

The identity of the youngest male is unknown, but it could have been a mis-identification of Lucinda (age 12); and the male age 45 and over could have been Joseph (age about 46). The age of the female, age 16-26, could have been Lucinda's sister Almira (age 20); and the female age 45 and over could have been Joseph's wife, Lucinda (age 46). Joseph appeared in the census in 1830 in Franklin, Delaware County, NY.²⁷⁴ This household could have been Joseph's. It consisted of 1 male, age 15-20 (Unknown); 1 male, age 20-30 (unknown, but possibly a mis-identification of his daughter, Lucinda (age 22); 1 male, age 50-60, Joseph (about 56); 1 female, under 5 (unknown); 1 female, age 20-30, his daughter, Almira (age 30); and 1 female, age 50-60, his wife, Lucinda (age 56). He died before 1840 at the age of 60.²⁷⁵ His wife was a Widow in the 1840 Census. He has Ancestral File Number KC62-M4Y.²⁷⁶ Joseph has Ancestral File Number KZBV-RQH. He has Ancestral File Number GK5M-F2S.²⁷ (His wife's gravestone states that she was the wife of "Joseph Griggs."

Joseph GRIGGS and Lucinda DIBBLE were married about 1797.^270,277 He and his family cannot be located in the 1800 Census in New York, where his daughter Almira was reportedly born in 1800 and his daughter Lucinda was born in 1808.

There are two possible 1800 Census listings in Massachusetts (where his wife was reportedly born) for a family headed by a Joseph Griggs, but neither can be confirmed as the households for this Joseph:

The Census for Sheffield, Berkshire County, MA contains the household with the following: 1 male, age 10 thru 15; 1 male, age 26 thru 44; 1 female, age under 10; 1 female, age 16 thru 25; 1 female, age 26 thru 44; and 1 female, age 45 and over. Lucinda DIBBLE^5,278, daughter of John DIBBLE and Olive Joyce HENRY, was born on 17 October 1774 in Mount Washington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.^{277,278,279,280} (Her surname may have been Dibble.)

Based on the apparent year of death of 1872 on her gravestone, her age of 87 years, 6 months, 17 days on her gravestone calculates her birth date to be in 1784, 10 years later than it is believed to have been on 17 October 1774.

However, the gravestone marking of the year of her death is not entirely clear. If it is 1862 (not 1872), the calculation to a birth year of 1774 would be correct. In addition, her ages reported in the 1850, 1855 and 1860 Census' agree with a birth year of 1774.

If she was born in 1784, she would have been only about 16 years old when her oldest daughter was born in 1800, so she was probably born in 1774.

. Lucinda appeared in the census in June 1855 in Stratford, Fulton County, NY.²⁸¹ She was living in the household of her daughter Lucinda and her family and was listed as age 79. She appeared in the census in June 1860 in Stratford, Fulton County, NY.^5,277 She was living with her daughter Lucinda and her family. She was described as age 85, "Helpless" and a "Pauper." She died in January 1861 at the age of 86 in Stratford, Fulton County, NY.^5,282 Obituary Notes: "Lucinda Briggs (sic) (born Dibble) was born in October 1774, in Mount Washington, Berkshire, Massachusetts, United States, to John Dibble and Olive Joyce Dibble (born Henry). John was born on August 16 1739, in Mount Washington, Berkshire, Massachusetts, United States. Olive was born on July 15 1745, in Mount Washington, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA.

Lucinda had 11 siblings: Ezra Dibble, Nathaniel Dibble, John Dibble, Jeremiah Dibble, Esther Blakesley (born Dibble), Ruth Griggs (born Dibble), Rachael Dibble, Hannah Dibble, Mary Harvey (born Dibble), Dorothy Blakeman (born Dibble) and Olive Joyce (born Dibble).

Lucinda passed away in January 1861, at age 86." Lucinda was buried in Stratford, Fulton County, NY.²⁷⁰ in the Round Top Cemetery. She has Ancestral File Number LYGY-ZS3. She has Ancestral File Number KPM9-5X1.
