A Tomah Journal article dated 29 March 1900 mentions that he had rescued someone. Root, who died very suddenly, Feb 1, following a stroke of paralysis. He was 75 years old. Funeral rites were held Monday and burial was made in Sparta.

Mr. Root leaves his widow and one son, Captain Elliott D. Root of the medical corps stationed at Camp Forrest, Tenn., four grandchildren, two sisters and one brother.
