Following graduation she worked for a time on Long Island and at Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania, in the Pocono Mountains, before going to work for the Knox School for Girls, which at that time was housed in the Hotel Otesagain Cooperstown. She met her future husband, Robert Root, while skiing at Mount Otsego. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown on August 2, 1942, and remained married for 53 years until Bob'spassing in 1995. Bob joined the U.S. Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor; he and Irene were married while he was on leave from the Army Air Corps.

After the war Bob and Irene, along with daughter Peggy, moved back to Bob's hometown of Springfield, New York, where they lived until moving to Cooperstown in 1952. Daughter Connie arrived in 1950. While living in Cooperstown, Irene worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the J. J. Newberry Company, at the same time keeping the books for Bob's business, RootSigns.

In 1973 the Roots relocated to Whitefield, New Hampshire, where Bob continued his sign business and Irene continued as bookkeeper. While in Whitefield, she also worked as a bookkeeper for the Spaulding Inn Club. After several years of living year-round in Whitefield, the Roots began dividing their time between their home in Whitefield, "Mole Knoll," in the summers and Florida in the winters. They lived and worked at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater, Florida, for a number of years before moving to Silver Springs. After Bob's death, Irene continued to live in Silver Springs until 2008 when she moved to Camelot Chateau Assisted Living Facility in nearby Ocala.

Irene was an avid gardener, growing vegetables and flowers wherever she lived. She was also a talented knitter and seamstress, creating beautiful handcrafted items for her family and friends. She and Bob both loved to fly and they were active in the flying club at Westville Airport for a number of years. She also loved photography and had an eye for an unusual picture.
