He had suffered long and patiently for months, but kept at his work until nature rebelled and forced him to give up. For a time he was in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital at Cooperstown, but was finally removed to his home where he was faithfully cared for by his devoted wife. He was the only child of Elmer J. Root and Clara Wickwire Root, born on the parental farm near Springfield Center and received his education in Springfield Center High School. September 27, 1921, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Marguerite Gray, who beside his parents, survives him. He is also survived by five children, Freida Arolyn, aged ten years; Robert Andrew, aged nine years; Hannah Jean, aged six years; Janet Marie, age three years; and Ida Kathryn, aged nine months. He, being quite a musician, his wife also being musical, organized a string orchestra which played for dances and various other entertainments. He was an electrician and also handled radios and supplies. His funeral was held Friday afternoon last, and was said to be the largest to ever be held in this place. The Rev. Henson officiated. Undertaker John McGrath of Richfield Springs was in charge of the service. Bearers were selected form among his orchestra. His Masonic fraternity conducted the service at the grave. His work here is done at the early age of twenty-seven years and eight months and he is at rest." . He was buried in 1933 in Springfield Center, Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.103,154 in the Springfield Cemetery. Burrell Amos ROOT and Phyllis Marguerite HAND were married on 27 September 1921 in Springfield Township, Otsego County, NY.100,109,198 On Sept. 27, 1921, she married Burrell Root; he predeceased her in 1934. On July 25, 1936, she married Glenn C. Ostrander; he predeceased her in 1963. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed her family. Mrs. Ostrander is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hannah Cory of Schuyler Lake; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Irene Root of Silver Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside memorial service (to be announced in the spring) in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, with Mr. Lyman Johnson officiating. Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc. in Cherry Valley. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley." The 1900 Census for Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY contains the household of "Edward" (not Edger) Hand (age 46); his wife, Maggie J. (age 36); and their six children. That may have been her birth parents because the 1880 Census for Stamford, Delaware County, contains the listing for Maggie J. Snyder, age 16, living as a "Servant" in the household of William McMurty. The Maggie in both records was born in about 1864, so they may have been the same person.
