Second Generation

2. Johann Friedrich "John" BRANDENBURG2 was born on 18 August 1818 in Preussen (Prussia).3,4,5 An article in the Monroe County Heritage Book lists his birth date as 18 August 1818, but the 1880 Census lists his age as 50, indicating a birth year of about 1830. In addition, his church marriage record listed his age as 27, indicating a birth year of about 1830. He emigrated on 14 June 1870 from Preussen (Prussia).6,7,8 He and his wife and six of their seven oldest children emigrated on the ship "Helene" through the port of Bremerhaven, and arrived in New York City.
He appeared in the census in 1880 in Sheldon Township, Monroe County, WI.4 His household consisted of "John Brandenberg," age 50; his wife, "Teinna," age 47; and their children, Herman, 14; William, 13; Lina, 9; and Anne, 6. His occupation was "Farmer." John died on 18 January 1882 at the age of 63 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.3 He was buried in August 1882 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.3,9 in the Old Aney (Summit Ridge) Cemetery, on County Trunk T, across the road from the George Walker farm.
He has Ancestral File Number LTTX-HJF. (His full name may have been Arbaitus Johann Brandenburg.")

Johann Friedrich "John" BRANDENBURG and Justine Maria Elisabeth "Gustina" PERGANDE were married on 16 February 1857 in Hermelsdorf, Kreis Naugard, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).1,2,3,6,10,11,12 (She was listed as "Justine Maria" in the Alt Damerow marriage record.)

According to the 1900 Census, she had 9 children, of whom 3 were living at the time. An article in the Monroe County Heritage Book states they had 6 children--five of whom were born in Germany (August, Wilhelmine, August, Justine, and Hermann) and one that was born in America (Helen). Justine Maria Elisabeth "Gustina" PERGANDE2, daughter of Gottlieb Gotthilf PERGANDE and Anna Maria GRIESSENTROG, was born in October 1832 in Alt Damerow, Kreis Saatzig, Regierungsbezirk Stettin, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).2,3,10,13,14,15,16,17,18 Her birthdate of "29 September 1833" is recorded on Page 12 of the "Pomerania, Germany, Parish Register Transcripts, 1544-1883" and that date is listed in her obituary. It is listed as "Oct 1832" in the Germany, Prussia, Pomerania, Catholic and Lutheran Church Records, 1544-1966, and her baptism date is listed as "28 Oct 1832."

The 1900 Census lists her birth date as September 1834 and her age as 65. Some MyHeritage.com sources list her birth and baptism year as 1831. Another MyHeritage.com website lists her birth as 28 Oct 1832 in "Stara Dabrowa, Slupsk, Pomorskie, Poland." Those dates are all incorrect.

Her given name as listed as "Ernestine" in the birth records of her son Herman Friedrich.

Stara Dąbrowa (Kashubian Starô Dãbrowa, German Alt Damerow ) is a village in Poland located in the Pomeranian Province, Słupsk County, Damnica Commune, near the national road no.  The village is situated 18.5 km from Słupsk . She was baptized on 28 October 1832 in Alt Damerow, Kreis Saatzig, Regierungsbezirk Stettin, Pommern (Pomerania) Province, Preussen (Prussia).2,17,19,20 She was confirmed on 28 March 1847 in Hohengustou, Brandenburg Province, Preussen (Prussia).19 Gustina emigrated on 14 June 1870 from Preussen (Prussia).7,8,11,21 According to the 1900 Census, she emigrated in 1861, as did her son William; that date was an error because William's birth was listed as February 1866 in Germany. The 1910 Census record for her as well as for her sons Herman and William indicated that they emigrated in 1871, and that is believed to have been correct. (Gary Griggs is unable to find her family's immigration record on Ancestry.com.) She appeared in the census in 1880 in Sheldon Township, Monroe County, WI.4 She was listed as "Teinne," age 47. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Sheldon Township, Monroe County, WI.11 She was living with her son William. Gustina appeared in the census in 1910 in Sheldon Township, Monroe County, WI.7 She was living with her son William. She appeared in the census in January 1920 in Wausau, Maine Township, Marathon County, WI.14 She was living with her daughter Anna and her family. She died on 25 April 1920 at the age of 87 in Wausau, Maine Township, Marathon County, WI.3,13,20,22,23 Obituary Notes: "Mrs. Gustina Brandenburg passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. Reinhold, 915 Forest Street, April 26 (sic, the 25th) at 9 p.m. The cause of her death was senility. Deceased was born in Pomerania, Germany, Sept. 29, 1883 (sic), and is 86 years of age. Funeral services have not yet been arranged." (Her birth year was 1833.) Gustina was buried in Wilton, Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.3,24 in the St. Paul's German Lutheran Church Cemetery in the Brandenburg lot. She is listed as "Justina" with dates 1833-1920.
She has Ancestral File Number LRGY-XKL. This is a picture of the family of Justine and Johann. From left to right: Earl, Bill, Herman, Johann and Justine, Wilhelmine, Justine, and Helena, with an unknown grandson in front.

Her name was listed as "Justine Marie Elisabeth" in the Alt Damerow records of her baptism and her marriage. However, her given name was listed as "Ernestine" in the records of the birth and baptism for her sons Hermann and Wilhelm and her daughters Louise and Justine, and as "Justina" for her son August.

An article in the Monroe County Heritage Book lists her as "Gustina." Family records list her as "Gustina Ernestine," with a nickname of "Justine."

Her name is listed as "Justine Kikaboo" on the baptism record for her daughter Helena; the origin of that surname is not known.
