Descendants of John Clay

John Clay and his wife Edith (Unknown) are the earliest-known ancestors of the many Clay families that settled in Monroe County in the mid 1800's.

Francis Clay was born in Lincolnshire County, England, in about 1810. He and his wife, Eleanor Blakewell, had five children, who were also born in England.

Their fourth child, Francis "Frank" Clay, Sr., was born in 1844, emigrated to America in 1873 and married his second wife, Francelia Bennett, in 1878. Four of their five children married into such Monroe County families as Griggs, Severloh, Snowberry and Vandervort.

(Much of the information in this report is from the research of Janelle (Vandervort) Dvorak.)
