6. John Ryley GRIFFIN was born about 1829 in New York.1 He appeared in the census in 1850 in Monroe Township, Green County, WI.3 He was living with his parents and his occupation was "Farmer." He died in 1873 at the age of 44 in Coffey County, KS.4,5,17 "John Ryley Griffin and his wife died in Coffey County, Kansas, leaving three orphaned children. One uncle, Elihu Hewitt Griffin, was all for putting them in an orphanage, but their uncle Valentine drove from Wisconsin with an oxcart (so the story goes) to bring them back here, where they grew up with his very large family. There was Rose, and then there were her brothers, Hannibal and Hamlin."
