Gottlieb SCHMALZ was born on 18 September 1844 in Pawlowko, Kreis Wongrowitz, Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).8,12,50 He emigrated on 24 June 1868 from Pawlowko, Kreis Wongrowitz, Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).14,49,51,52 He emigrated from Pawlowo through Hamburg on the Saxonia and arrived in New York City on 8 July 1868. He was Lutheran on 1 November 1874 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.53,54 when he became a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He and his wife were listed in the church Communion Records in the early-1890's. Gottlieb appeared in the census in 1875 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.55 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.1,8,14 His occupation was listed as "Farmer."

The 1880 Census lists Gottlieb, his wife Minna and an "Otilia" Schmalz (age 19 and born in Prussia) in their household in Ridgeville. "Otilia" would have been too old to be their daughter, and Article 634 in the Monroe County Heritage Book indicates that Gottlieb had two brothers, but mentions no sisters. It is believed that "Otilia" was probably Gottlieb's step-sister, Ottillie, the daughter of his father Michael and his second wife Henrietta Prell.

He appeared in the census in 1905 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.48 His occupation was "Retired Farm." Gottlieb appeared in the census in 1910 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.49 His household was at 634 East Main Street in the 3rd Ward. He was a Widower and was living on his "own income."

(He cannot be located in the 1920 Census.) He died on 7 April 1929 at the age of 84 in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County, WI.10,50,56 He died of "senility" at the "Lutheran Altenhuin" or "Lutheran Altenhuisen." (His death certificate is not clear.)
He was buried on 9 April 1929 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.10,18 in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Gottlieb SCHMALZ and Wilhelmine "Minna" MITTELSTAEDT were married on 5 November 1874 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.12,50,57,58 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Their witnesses were Ernst Schmalz and Julius Mittelstaedt. Wilhelmine "Minna" MITTELSTAEDT, daughter of Friedrich "Gottfried" MITTELSTAEDT and Anna Catharina SCHMALZ, was born on 29 October 1854 in Preussen (Prussia).7,12,59 She appeared in the census in 1880 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.8 She appeared in the census in 1905 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.48 Minna died on 30 March 1908 at the age of 53 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.59 She was buried on 2 April 1908 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.18,59 in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
