He was baptized on 8 February 1852.⁶⁰ His sponsors were Ludwig Wilhelm Kutlo (Kuthlow?), Johann (?), Wilhelmine (?), and Louise Preuss. He emigrated on 24 May 1871 from Posen Province, Preussen (Prussia).^14,20,29 He emigrated from Sypnietwo through Hamburg to America on the ship Holsatia. Ernest appeared in the census in 1880 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ His occupation was "Laborer." He appeared in the census in 1900 in Sparta Township, Livingston County, NY.²⁹ His household was in the 1st Ward and his occupation was "House Carpenter." He was buried in 1928 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.⁹ Ernest died in 1928 at the age of 76.⁹

Ernst "Ernest" SCHMALZ and Maria Margaretha "Mary" SCHLUENZ were married on 29 September 1878 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^5,12,49,57 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. According to the 1910 Census, they had 4 children, of whom 2 were living at the time.

(The Monroe County marriage records spell her surname as "Schlenz;" in the Kuthlow family records it is spelled as "Schleunz." It is believed to have been "Schluenz.") Maria Margaretha "Mary" SCHLUENZ, daughter of Johann Friedrich Theodor SCHLUENZ and Sophia BOLDT, was born on 7 December 1859 in Watertown Township, Jefferson County, WI.^8,12,29,50 (Her surname was spelled "Schluenz" in the baptism records of her son Eduard in 1879 and Martin in 1883.) She was confirmed on 6 April 1873 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹² at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ Her household was next door to that of her parents.
