Mary Ann LEA13 was born on 6 December 1834 in London, Middlesex County, England.1,6,14,15 She emigrated in 1848 from England, United Kingdom.4,15 She appeared in the census in 1850 in Concord Township, Jefferson County, WI.8 Mary appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.1 She died on 13 October 1877 at the age of 42 in Monroe County, WI.4,14,15,16 (She died in Kirby or Tomah.) She was buried in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.17,18,19 in the Lincoln-Peterson-Kirby Cemetery. Mary has Ancestral File Number K2YD-FQH.

Mary Ann LEA and Evan Hugh JAMES were married about 1856 in Waukesha Township, Waukesha County, WI.10,16 They were married in her father's home by Rev. G. W. Bowen, in the presence of their parents and Mary A. Bowen and Nancy A. Carlton. They settled first in Concord, Jefferson County, WI, and moved to Kirby, Monroe County in 1866, where they built their home and farm. Mary Ann died in 1877, but he farmed there until 1893.

The move to Tomah was made by wagon and oxen. The ox yoke that they used on the trip and a wood plane were brought from Wales by Evan. It is now located at the Local History Room in Sparta, WI.

(Evan and his family cannot be located in the 1860 Census.) (According to his obituary, he had seven children.)

Obituary Notes: "Died, at his home in this city, on Sunday morning, June 7, 1896, E. H. James, in the 60th year of his age.

The deceased was born in Wales, coming to this country in early life. He had resided in this city about two years, moving here from the town of Lincoln, this county, where he had lived for over twenty years.

His death resulted from a complication of diseases of long standing. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three daughters to mourn his loss.

The funeral took place on Tuesday in the M.E. Church, and in the absence of the pastor the services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Morse, of the Congregational Church. The remains were intered in the Kirby cemetery." He was buried on 9 June 1896 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.17,18,20 in the Lincoln-Peterson-Kirby Cemetery.
