Louisa Johanna Dorothea "Lizzie" MARTEN was born on 25 May 1865 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^5,22,25 She appeared in the census in 1870 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ She was confirmed on 6 April 1879 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²² at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Lizzie appeared in the census in 1910 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹² She appeared in the census in 1920 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁶ She appeared in the census in 1930 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁴ Lizzie died on 7 November 1943 at the age of 78 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^5,34

Obituary Notes: "Mrs. Louise Bartels Passed Away Nov. 7. Louise Marten Bartels was born
July 25, 1865 in the township of Tomah, Wisconsin, one of a family of eight children. In 1883 she was married to Gustav G. Bartels and went to live on a farm at Ridgevile, continuing to live there until 1919 when the farm was sold and the family moved to the city
of Tomah, where she resided until ill health made it necessary for her to live with her married
daughter in New Richmond, Wis.

Besides the daughter, Cora Bartels Sias, there were three sons who died during youth and early manhood, and this fact was always a deep and lasting sorrow to her. Her husband also preceded her in death, he having died in March of 1937. Mrs. Bartels' life was lived very quietly and unassumingly, but marked by a strong and abiding faith in her Saviour, and enhanced with the joy of doing a kindness or an act of generosity, wherever she saw the need. In this connection she also helped with the Lord's work by contributing hundreds of dollars to the "Lutheran Hour" broadcasts. Her life was lived according to exacting
standards and she has set a sharp pattern therein, for those to follow who come after her.

The last years of her life were hard for she was afflicted with the disabling pain of arthritis, and the last months were especially difficult due to other serious complications. Death came early in the morning of November 7, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 12 days.

She leaves to mourn for her, one daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sias of New Richmond, Wisconsin, one granddaughter, Marie Louise Sias, three sisters, one sister-in-law, many niece's and nephews, and a host other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted for her on November 10 at the Lutheran church in Tomah. interment in Oak Grove cemetery of this city." She was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁶ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Louisa Johanna Dorothea "Lizzie" MARTEN and Gustav Georg "Gus" BARTHELS were married on 6 September 1883 in Monroe County, WI.^5,21,22 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Gustav Georg "Gus" BARTHELS, son of Johann Otto BARTHELS and Anna Sophia KIEKSCHNER, was born on 18 March 1860 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.^5,9,22,25,43 (He was 3 months old at the time of the 1860 Census, conducted in July.) (His surname is spelled "Bartels" in his church confirmation record and in his marriage record.) He appeared in the census in July 1860 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.⁹ He appeared in the census in 1870 in Wilton Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ Gus was confirmed on 29 March 1874 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.²² at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was Lutheran in 1889 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.^44,45 He was listed as number 56 of the 100 original members of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was also listed in the Communion Register. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.¹² His occupation was listed as "Farmer, General Farm."

(He could not be located in Wisconsin in the 1880 Census, nor could he and his wife be located in Wisconsin in the 1900 Census.) Gus appeared in the census in 1920 in Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁶ He appeared in the census in 1930 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁴ He died in March 1937 at the age of 77.⁵ Gus was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.³⁶ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
