Hazel worked as a teller at the Bank of Sparta until her marriage. They lived in Tomah after their marriage, and moved to Sparta in 1927, where Harold was employed at the Western Supply Company. He owned and operated Van's Grocery in Sparta for 36 years.

Harold served on the City of Sparta Board of Review for many years and both were lifelong members of the United Methodist Church, Hazel Adeline JANES was born on 16 February 1898 in Little Falls Township, Monroe County, WI.^9,38,73,76 (She may have been born in Cataract.) She graduated in 1916 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.⁷³ from Sparta High School. She died on 16 May 1974 at the age of 76 in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.^9,38,73,76 Hazel was buried in Sparta, Sparta Township, Monroe County, WI.⁴³ in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
