He was not one of the Pilgrims that was escaping personal religious persecution. Rather, he was a 22-year-old servant of Stephen Hopkins, one of the "Strangers" who joined the Pilgrims to fill the passenger load. Edward was the 40th of the 42 signers of the Mayflower Compact.
