He was later transferred to the Twenty-fifth New York Infantry, and served until the close of the war, as corporal of his regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and taken prisoner. After a period of confinement in Libby Prison he was exchanged, and it was while he was home on a furlough that General Lee surrendered. Beginning in August 1878, he received a pension of $2 per month for "wound, one foot." Following the close of the war he connected himself with the Grand Army of the Republic, and was a member of Tomah Post, Tomah, Wisconsin. He was pictured with the Civil War Veterans of Tomah, WI, in 1890. After 1865 Charles was a postmaster, justice of the peace and township assessor in Tunnel City, Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.51 He appeared in the census in 1870 in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.127 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.57 His occupation was "Farmer." In 1897 Charles was a farmer in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI. He owned a 150-acre farm in Sections 4 and 5. He died on 4 March 1910 at the age of 72 in Tunnel City, Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.126,131 in the Greenfield Cemetery.
