Third Generation

9. Mary W. NEHLS was born about 1852 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Province, Preussen (Prussia).6,18,32,35

In the 1870 Census, Mary and her son Fred were living with her parents. She was listed under her maiden name, and there was no indication that she was married. Aside from her father, no adult male is living with them.

According to the 1880 Census, in which she was living with her husband George, her children Fred and Laura were his step-children. The Census indicates that Fred's father was born in Germany, and Laura's was born in Wisconsin. She had either been married previously, or the children were born out of wedlock. When she married George, she listed her surname as Nehls.

The 1880 Census records indicate that Mary's first husband or boyfriend was born in Germany, and they had a child, Fred, who was born in March 1870 in Wisconsin. Her second husband or boyfriend was born in Wisconsin, and they had a child, Laura, born about 1872 in Wisconsin. Mary then married George Bowers and they had a child, Josephine, born about 1877 in Michigan. (The Census indicates that Josephine's father was born in Pennsylvania, and that fits for George, and her mother was born in Germany, and that fits for Mary.)

The 1910 Census indicates that Mary had a total of four children, of whom two were still living at the time. Fred and Josephine were known to be living in 1910, so Laura must have died before then. It is not known who the fourth child was, or when he/she was born and died.
