Sarah "Jane" DAKE and Samuel Pettingill TAYLOR were married on 20 March 1843 in Fort Ann, Fort Ann Township, Washington County, NY.10,11,22,23,24 It is very likely that Sarah Jane was visiting with her uncle Benjamin Dake and his wife in Fort Ann (they are listed in the 1840 Census) when she met her future husband, Samuel.

Monroe County Heritage Book Article: "The Taylors came to Monroe County from Fort Ann, NY in the mid-1800's. They were among the first settlers in Oakdale. In 1857, they moved into the home that they had built in 1844. They subsequently added on to this house, which remains in the Taylor family today. Sarah kept a journal which told of bitter cold in winter when they managed to keep warm by carefully tending the fires all day and all night. She wrote of neighbors fighting drought-caused fires in the woods and marshes in August as well as fighting house fires in the dead of winter. Sarah's account emphasizes the interdependence of the community; family and friends made it through rough times because they had each other.

But the journal was not merely a collection of shared struggles. Sarah's pleasure in her surroundings is evident in her description of a visit with friends in Tomah in October 1894. She writes that they 'rode home under the electric lights. The main street looked splendid.' Sarah's home had no electric lights in the 1890's."
