From a "Reflections" article by a granddaughter, Jean Arity Lessor, in the Tomah Journal: "When I was a little girl, I had a grandpa--a grandpa with thin, whispy, almost white hair and a beard--a grandpa who sometimes smoked a plain, ordinary corncob pipe or maybe a meerscham one with a curved stem--a grandpa who would sit in his rocking chair and hold me on his lap while singing about Lil Liza Jane and the street cars in Baltimore--a grandpa who might be gone for two or three days visiting friends or cousins, and once when he came back he brought a big egg (a goose egg) that he cooked and shared with me--a grandpa who let me tag along to the melon patch where he selected a good one for us to eat, carried it in the bib of his overalls until we got to a shady 'sitting' spot by the road, pulled out his jackknife and cut the melon for us to enjoy right then and there.

Yes, I had a grandpa and one day he got sick and in a couple of weeks he was gone, and I didn't have Gramp anymore."
