It was listed as "Gerlinger" in the 1880 and 1900 Census records, but his oldest daughter, Irene, was listed in the Birth Registration records as "Gilner" in 1903. In the 1910 Census, it was spelled "Gilnerger.") John died in 1947 at the age of 73.²⁴ He was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.²⁴ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

John Henry GERLINGER Sr. and Minnie Bertha SCHUELER were married on 11 September 1900 in Monroe County, WI.^2,4,8 (The 1910 Census indicated that they had 4 children, of whom 3 were living at the time. An article in the Monroe County Heritage book indicates that they had 9 children, with two dying in infancy.)
