John HARP was born on 30 September 1819 in New York.1,2,5 His age was listed as 45 in the 1860 Census, indicating a birth year of about 1815, and as 57 in the 1870 Census, indicating a birth year of about 1813. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Chemung Township, McHenry County, IL.6 His household consisted of John, age 34, occupation "Farmer;" his wife, Eve, age 36; "Benjamin Harp," age 19, occupation "Farmer" (believed to have been Eve's son from a prior relationship, and whose actual name was Benjamin Miller); Jane, 16; William, 12; Ann, 10; Jacon, 9; Nancy, 7; George, 5; Cornelia, 3; and Daniel, 1. The two youngest children were born in Illinois, and all other members of the family were born in New York. Also living in his household were Eve's parents, William and Sally Miller.

He appeared in the census in 1855 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.7,8 John appeared in the census in 1860 in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.2 He appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.5 His household was next door to that of his son William and his family. He died on 9 December 1896 at the age of 77 in Monroe County, WI.1 John was buried in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.9 in the Lincoln-Peterson-Kirby Cemetery.

John HARP and Eva MILLER were married before 1834.1,2 Eva MILLER, daughter of William MILLER and Sally UNKNOWN (MILLER), was born on 1 April 1810 in New York.1,10 (Her given name is listed as "Evoy" in the Registration of Marriages for her son William.) She appeared in the census in 1850 in Chemung Township, McHenry County, IL.6 She appeared in the census in 1855 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.8 Eva appeared in the census in 1860 in Greenfield Township, Monroe County, WI.2,11 Her age was listed as 48.

In the 1860 Census, their household included a girl named Charlotte, age 5, born in WI; the girl did not appear in any later census records with Eva's family. It is believed that the girl was Charlotte Miller, the daughter of Benjamin Miller, who lived next door. Charlotte was not listed with her parents, and the enumerator may have made a mistake or Charlotte may have been visiting them.

It is believed that Benjamin Miller was the son of Eva Miller, the wife of John Harp, and that he was born before Eva and John married. The identity of his father is not known. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.5 She died on 26 March 1895 at the age of 84 in Monroe County, WI.1 Eva was buried in Lincoln Township, Monroe County, WI.9 in the Lincoln-Peterson-Kirby Cemetery.

Jacob was a blacksmith in Allen's Grove, Walworth County, WI.12 According to The History of Walworth (Wis.), page 763, he was the first blacksmith in town.
