"After the death of her first husband William Horel, Sarah married widower Frank Brown who had four children of his own. Daughter Alice did not get along with step-father Frank Brown, so she went to live in Tunnel City with her Uncle Otis Vandervort. When the school year was over, she then went to live with grandparents, James B. and Anna Vandervort on their farm near Tomah. Also living there at this time was Willie, a "State School boy" being raised by James and Anna.

Daughter Pansy stayed with her mother and Frank during this time. Then Sarah wrote to Gramma Mary Orr Horel to see if she would take both Alice and Pansy to live with her in Iowa. Pansy was in her 8th grade year in school. Pansy and Alice left at the Thanksgiving break (Nov 1905) to go to Iowa. The following Spring, Alice was again dissatisfied and couldn't get along with Gramma Horel. So both girls packed up and came back home to Wisconsin.

They were met by Grampa James B. VDV and taken to his house. While the girls were in Iowa, Sarah and Frank had sold their home in Tomah and bought a farm nearby. Sarah was pregnant with Frank's child at the time. Because of the pending newborn, Pansy was taken home to live with mother Sarah and step-father Frank. The baby didn't live long and was buried in LaGrange Cemetery along side Maud Horel (Sarah's first born). Frank was to make arrangements for Pansy to start high school in Sparta and work for her room and board, but he failed to do so. When Grampa James B. VDV found out Pansy was not in school, he insisted she live with him.

Pansy lived with James B. and Anna VDV for 3 years or until she was a senior in high school. At that time she quit and took a job in the employee's dining room at the Indian School in Tomah. Later she tried to test out of school but had forgotten too much, so she returned to her job in the dining room. Later that year she married Leo Edgar Griffin.

Alice also lived with grandparents James B. and Anna VDV until she married Gary Ellis. Sarah moved to Oregon in the last years of her life to live with Pansy."
