HOVLAND was born on 15 July 1878 in Springville, Vernon County, WI.⁷ She appeared in the census in 1910 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ She appeared in the census in 1920 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.⁹ Ethel appeared in the census in 1930 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ She died on 8 September 1961 at the age of 83 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.⁷ She was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹¹ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

"Eli, with his parents, moved to Monroe County about 1890, coming to a farm near Valley Junction. This is where he met his bride. They lived and worked on a farm near Janesville the first few months of their marriage, and then moved back to a farm at Valley Junction, where their first child was born.

In 1908, Eli bought 160 acres in the Township of Grant, where he developed a thriving farm. In 1927, Eli fulfilled his dream of having his own store. He rented a building first, and then built a log store and tavern near the farm. In 1942, the government bought the farm and store, making it part of Camp McCoy; so they moved to Sparta, living there until 1955.

Eli, a staunch Republican, was assessor for the Town of Grant for many terms and took the 1924 census in Grant, Greenfield and LaGrange townships. He was a member of the school board and active in his church and Grant Community Club." Eli Albert SUTHERLAND, son of Stephan Elijah SUTHERLAND and Marion C. WADE, was born on 4 January 1878 in Readstown, Vernon County, WI.^4,13 He appeared in the census in 1880 in Kickapoo Township, Vernon County, WI.¹⁴ He appeared in the census in 1910 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.⁸ Eli appeared in the census in 1920 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.² He appeared in the census in 1930 in Grant Township, Monroe County, WI.¹⁰ He died in 1971 at the age of 93 in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.^4,7 at the Rolling Hills Nursing Home. Eli was buried in Tomah, Tomah Township, Monroe County, WI.¹¹ in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
