His granddaughter Joan Crawford writes that Frank "married my grandmother, Emma Amanda Kemnow, at the age of 28. I asked him how come they waited so long to get married, and he replied, 'It wasn't the style in them years'." Franz Albert Theodor "Frank" KUEHL Sr., son of Wilhelm Ferdinand Theodor KUHL and Auguste PERGANDE, was born on 31 January 1877 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.4,5,10,21,27,28,29,30,31

Frank "was born in a log cabin. When he was 2 years old the log cabin burned down and a new house was constructed on the site. At age 5 he had his first experience with chewing tobacco, when his father raised tobacco plants. He ended up quite sick with diarrhea and vomiting from the results of the tobacco, but he was determined not to give up trying. He chewed tobacco until his death in 1970, when he was 93 years of age. He often said that the reason for his long life was chewing tobacco."

He was baptized as "Kuehl" and his father was shown with the same surname; later children in the family are shown with "Kuhl." He appeared in the census in 1880 in Adrian Township, Monroe County, WI.4 Frank was confirmed on 22 March 1891 in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.31 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. From 1906 to 1940 he was a farmer in Ridgeville Township, Monroe County, WI.32 Historical Society Notes: "Till he was 29, grandfather ran his father's 255-acre farm where he was to receive $15.00 a month. However the only pay he received was a hard-working horse. In 1906 he bought his father's other farm, in the town of Adrian, Monroe County, WI, which had 115 acres, for $8,000.00. Later, he bought another 40 acres; at that time he had 15 milking cows and 15 young stock. Grandfather's barn burned down and he was forced to build another which is standing today, and the farm house in which he raised ten children...."

"Stealing was great in those days when grandfather became a victim, of $460.42, which was stolen from him. This money was supposed to be used to pay for his farm. Great-grandfather also had $3,600.00 stolen from him, and this also was never recovered."

"From 1940 to 1964 grandfather worked at various jobs which include: the railroad, carpenter work, building fences, and helping out area farmers with the haying and farming; the farming fever which he could never get out of his blood."
