(He may have had a brother named Ernst Friedrich Westphal.) After they were here awhile, they purchased a plot of land that had been obtained from the U.S. government, by Isaac Dennis, in 1855. He then sold it to Oliver and Melissia Perry, January 14, 1856. Gottlieb bought it August 12, 1868. They raised a family of ten children here. In 1905 the farm was divided between sons August and Albert. Albert retained the original homestead. He was listed as member number 52 of the first 100 members of the congregation. He helped organize St. John's Congregation of Ridgeville and served as a trustee. His son-in-law, William Matthews, and his son, Albert, were two of the carpenters who helped build the present church.
